Preview application on macOS can convert a file into different file types, such as JPEG, JPEG-2000, PDF and more. JPEG-2000 is used for large images and can produce higher image quality than JPEG. However, this format is not as widely supported as JPEG and will require more memory to process. If JPEG-2000 file needs to be shared, check with the receiver if they can open JPEG-2000 files.


This article will provide instructions on how to convert a PDF file into JPEG-2000. 


  1. Click on Finder and right-click on the desired PDF file. Click on Open With, then click on Preview.


  2. Once the PDF is opened, click File, then click Export...


  3. In the pop-up window, change the setting to desired format. In this example, JPEG-2000 was selected.


  4. Change the Resolution to desired number then click Save. For this example, the resolution is set to 900.


    Recommended resolution for documents with smaller text is 600 or 900 pixels/inch.
